Compressed discs lead to two major problems: a bulge or herniation pressing on a nerve; this also leads to brittleness of the disc. It becomes a problem that’s often perpetuated by the compressed disc restricting the flow of nutrients to itself, which are greatly needed to heal properly.

The traditional treatment to correct this problem in the past was surgery. More recently though, Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-invasive alternative method that is both FDA approved, and has shown extremely positive results.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-invasive treatment method that provides gentle decompression of the disc through the use of a decompression table. During the treatment, you are strapped to the apparatus so that it applies a distraction force to the targeted area of the spine (the compressed disc) as it moves. A computer then controls the distraction force which is applied in between periods of relaxation. This gently pulls the spine apart, both elongating it, and creating a small vacuum between the vertebrae which pulls the disc back into place.

Very similar to a repetitive stress injury, the decompression works in very small increments. Yet over time, these gains adds up to let the disc reshape itself, heal, and get the proper flow of nutrients back to fight off brittleness and future injuries. Reason #1: Chiropractic care actually fixes the issue.

Pain relief medications do not fix any problem. Sure, they do provide relief, but only on a short-term basis. I’m sure we can all agree that pain relief drugs only mask the pain for a while. After their effects wear off, one finds of course, that the pain is still is there. If you suffer from chronic back pain, it could very well be another day or two before the following backache returns, but you know as well as I do that it most definitely will.

Short-term relief is sought through continued healing massages, which can over time, lead to very effective long-term pain relief. Another form of long-term relief is chiropractic adjustments or spinal alignments.

With pain medications, you have to think on a more long-term scale. As you know, they only mask the problems causing you pain, which thus makes a long-term customer out of the consumer. That’s you! Even with insurance covering the price of most prescription pain-relievers, their costs add up over a period of time.

Furthermore, continuous chiropractic care isn’t always necessary. It’s very possible that your chiropractor will perform a simple neck adjustment, have you return for one follow-up appointment, and then meet with you once more to demonstrate for you some beneficial at-home methodologies to reduce future discomfort. I’ll leave the math up to you…but three appointments with a chiropractor, whether or not you pay out-of-pocket, are astronomically less expensive than years worth of pain pills.

It is very well known that seeking chiropractic care to treat migraines is a beneficial plan of action, as it truly can help. In fact, several clinical trials have proven that spinal manipulation therapy greatly aids in the treatment of migraine headaches. In one specific study of people with migraines, 22% of those who received chiropractic care in the form of spinal manipulation therapy reported more than a 90% reduction of attacks! In addition to those astonishing results, 49% reported a significant reduction in the severity of each migraine.

In another study, people with migraine headaches were randomly selected to receive spinal manipulation therapy, a daily medication (Elavil), or a combination of both. The chiropractic option was just as effective as Elavil in reducing migraines and had fewer side effects.

Some symptoms to watch out for if you think you’re experiencing migraines include:

These symptoms may occur at the same time or before the headache:

• Nausea and vomiting
• Dizziness, lightheadedness, or even vertigo (feeling like the room is spinning)

• Parts of your body may feel numb, weak, or tingly
• Light, noise, and movement – especially bending over – make your head hurt worse; you want to lie down in a dark, quiet room

• Loss of appetite
• Fatigue
• Visual disturbances, like seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines, temporary blind spots (for example, loss of your peripheral vision), or blurred vision

Symptoms that may linger even after the headache is gone:

• Feeling mentally dull, like your thinking is labored or unclear
• Drowsiness
• Neck pain

Have you been in an accident recently, and are now experiencing neck pain?
If you’re experiencing pain in regions of the head or the base of the skull, neck, or shoulders, it’s quite possible that you have what’s called whiplash. Although most patients who get whiplash and receive treatment tend to recover within a few months, statistics show that 15 to 20% of all untreated whiplash victims end up developing chronic pain in their neck, shoulders, or back.

“How can I tell if I have whiplash?”
Well, there are a multitude of symptoms associated with the whiplash syndrome, some of the lesser ones including:

• trouble sleeping
• ringing in the ears
• problems with concentration or memory
• fatigue/ weakness
• blurred vision

Some of the more serious symptoms that you have to really watch out for are:

• severe headaches
• pain in the neck and shoulders
• pain between the shoulder blades
• heaviness/pain in one or both arms

Irritability due to sleep deprivation, depression, fatigue, dizziness, or aching pain is also a common reaction.

“So, what exactly is whiplash anyways?”
Whiplash gets its name from the traumatic event (most commonly, a car accident) that causes the head to jar suddenly – or “whip” – in one direction, and then recoil in the opposite direction. The most common cases of whiplash are due to a motor vehicle accident wherein one vehicle is hit from behind by another.
